Abstract

The combination of the Internet and health is changing the way of accessing information and communicating in relation to rare diseases, and among other initiatives it stands out its presence in the most popular networks of the moment: Twitter and Facebook. This paper explores how associations of rare diseases use these social networks in order to improve their visibility and disseminate information about their problems. The results indicate that the accounts they use on Twitter are characterized by a high degree of linkage with their followers. In contrast, the engagement level is very weak on Facebook.
