Abstract
Karmelo Etxegarai translated into Basque a short story by the Flemish writer Hendrik Conscience at the end of the nineteenth century, when Basque literature was in the process of construction. The translation fulfilled a double function. On the one hand, it contributed to the development of a new literary repertoire at a time when Basque literary production in prose was still very limited; and on the other hand it contributed to the construction of a Basque identity. As is shown by this historical–descriptive and functional analysis, the Basque translation strategy of Conscience was very different from the strategy used for Spanish translation by the same author at the same period in the Basque Country, and also very different from the strategy used for French translation, although Etxegarai used the latter for his translation of the Flemish author. In fact, the exchange between both ‘peripheral’ literatures passed through Paris
