Doctor by the Universidad del País Vasco - Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea with the thesis Fabrication and characterization of lactide and caprolactone based bioresorbable and bioactive polymer scaffolds for tissue-engineering applications 2014. Supervised by Dr. José Ramón Sarasua Oiz.

Dr. Aitor Larrañaga is associate lecturer at the Department of Mining-Metallurgy Engineering and Materials Science at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and performs his research activities at the Group in Science and Engineering of Polymeric Biomaterials (ZIBIO Group, Polymat), being the co-PI together with Prof. Jose-Ramon Sarasua. His main interest is focused on the development of polymeric systems with advanced functional properties at the micro- and nanoscale with therapeutic potential. Thanks to his multidisciplinary profile, with core research training in materials science and engineering and broad experience in cell and molecular biology, he has participated in several multidisciplinary research projects aiming at the treatment of several diseases. Dr. Aitor Larrañaga has actively contributed to the scientific community with two patents, two book chapters, participation in international conferences and with over 40 research articles in prestigious journals in the field of biomaterials and materials science and engineering (e.g., Progress in Materials Science, Nanoscale, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Healthcare Materials, Advanced Materials, Acta Biomaterialia, etc.). According to Google Scholar, Dr. Larrañaga has >1200 citations and an h-index of 22. So far, Dr. Larrañaga has cosupervised two PhD students and is currently co-supervising five PhD students. He has participated in several funded projects at the regional, national and European level, acting as a (co)principal investigator in four of them.
