Abstract

The historical knowledge of students in higher education is now very poor and the development of historical thinking is weak. One of the causes of this alarming situation may be the ephemeral and perishable knowledge produced by the traditional methodology of learning and teaching in the social sciences. In this sense, and in order to acquire the skills required by fluid modernity and to develop historical thinking and democratic citizenship among future primary school teachers, we have carried out an international project at the Faculty of Education and Sport of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Based on the political, institutional, socio-economic, historical and cultural reality of the Basque Country, the students of the Faculty of Education of Vitoria-Gasteiz had to transfer their knowledge of the Basque Economic Agreement to the members of the Plekhanov University of Economics in Russia. The development of this case has helped them to internalize the concepts of change and continuity, which are important in the development of historical thinking, and has made it possible to highlight the importance of the different teaching resources as first-hand sources, the Basque material heritage and the current institutional as well as political structure.
