Abstract
Social networks have become a fast way to spread disinformation. The acceptance of fake news can be analyzed from findings on how people select information based on heuristics and cognitive biases, which impacts on making erroneous decisions about the news veracity. The aim of this paper is to present the framework of an investigation conducted to determine whether cognitive biases are linked to the acceptance of fake news in social networks. In this research, 96 people participated in a task of discrimination of seven news items, justifying their response through options representing biases and heuristics. It is concluded that it is necessary to promote the recognizing of one’s own habitual biases as a way for the critical analysis of news, favoring strategies such as the search for complementary information and decreasing trust in the news shared in social networks.
