Resumen

This article argues that, since the COVID19 outbreak, ‘digital diasporas’ worldwide have become more vulnerable with regard to their digital rights and are now facing unprecedented technopolitical risks. Against this backdrop, this article proposes a novel term – Hyperconnected Diasporas – by suggesting (i) a technopolitical wake-up call for regional governments worldwide when dealing with paradiplomacy anddiaspora engagement initiatives, and (ii) a necessary critical standpoint on the understanding and use of extractivist and pervasively hegemonic social media platforms that clearly impact diasporic citizens’ data privacy, ethics, and ownership.
