Abstract

In this issue we have an interview with two Flemish sociolinguistics, both of them old friends of the Basque Country: Kas Deprez, a teacher of Sociolinguistics at the universities of Amberes and Lovaine, and Armel Wynants who is a teacher at the University of Lieja and the Linguistic Commissioner at Voeren-Fourons. We have talked about different aspects of the linguistic problem in the Belgian State: development of the process of normalization of the Flemish Language, social attitudes with regard to the different languages, behaviours on territoriality and bilinguism, censures, linguistic frontiers, the special status of the capital city, legal situation in the field of labour, the different changes of the Belgian Constitution, the situation in the field of teaching, etc; an interesting view, of course, for the process of normalization that we are living in the Basque Country. The reader can find more information on the Belgian affair in the essay "Hizkuntz lurraldetasuna Belgikan" (Language Territoriality en Belgium) by Txillardegi, published in the second issue 2 of this journal of sociolinguistics, in november, 1990.
