Abstract
With the growth of internet and digital media new concerns about the privacy and security of users arises, which are more important in the case of children as they are morevulnerable than adults. In this context, it is a priority to address the potential risks thatchildren may face in the network, as well as consider possible strategies for its preventionand management. This research focuses on analyzing the so-called “commercial risks”,understood as commercial, advertising or marketing content that can disturb, confuse oroverwhelm the user while browsing. In particular, we study the perception of children oversuch commercial stimulus and the actions they take to avoid or overcome them once theyhave appeared. We use a qualitative methodology based on focus groups and interviews with children between 9 and 16 years old in nine European countries. The investigationfound that there is a high level of knowledge about the risks associated with some commercial content on the Internet, especially on those related to sexual content or perceived asfraudulent. The results demonstrate the need to continue guiding children on a safe internetbrowsing, for what the implication of parents it is still important.
