Abstract

Prison is a sexist, androcentric and discriminatory institution for women inmates which therefore (re)creates gender inequality and unequal gender relationships. Nevertheless, imprisoned women perform some practices of resistance in order to confront –in one way or another– the difficulties and limitations that imprisonment and loss of liberty cause. The current article analyses writing as a practice of resistance in prison. The analysis is based on a doctoral thesis entitled Prison as a gender institution: gender inequality, practices of resistance and agency among women inmates in the Basque Country, and special attention is given to the case of an inmate who has been named Simone.
