Abstract

In our society, hydrogen is an increasingly important source of energy. Among all the production techniques, methane steam reforming is the most widely used. This process is based on the following steps: natural gas cleaning, heating process, reforming furnace, water-steam conversion and hydrogen separation; the most significant being the reforming furnace. However, this technique has several challenges related to the emitted CO2, the design of the catalysts and the energy consumption. This paper presents a general description of the methane steam reforming process, providing an overview of the combustion chamber, catalysts, thermal efficiency and modelling of the reforming furnace.
