Abstract

This article analyses the memory of the Civil War in post-war Basque nationalism through the figure of Telesforo Monzón. Through his poetry Monzón participated in the elaboration of a heroic memory of the war. He contributed to the forging of the myth of the gudari and making sacred the experience of war, presenting the death of the young soldiers as martyrdom for the Basque homeland. By glorifying the supreme sacrifice for Euskadi, embodied in the fallen gudari, an ideal model of behaviour was being proposed that in the future would influence the young nationalists socialised in the post-war period.
