Doctor by the Universidad del País Vasco - Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea with the thesis Small clusters of ii-vi materials 2002. Supervised by Dr. Inmaculada Higueras Sanz.
Jon M. Matxain obtained his Chemistry Degree in 1998, at the University of the Basque Country, after carrying out the last two years at Utrecht University, hosted by Theoretical Chemistry Group, led by Prof. Dr. Frans B. van Duijneveldt. In 2002 he obtained the Ph.D Degree (International Thesis, and the Extraordinary Prize of Doctorate), under the supervision of Prof. Jesus M. Ugalde, at the University of the Basque Country. During this period he stayed for three months at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, hosted by Prof. Richard Needs. After his postdoctoral period in Sweden (2005-2006), in the group of Prof. Leif A. Erikson, he obtained a Ramon y Cajal Fellowship and incorporated to the Theoretical Chemistry Group at the University of the Basque Country. Since 2024 he is Full Professor of Physical Chemistry, at the UPV/EHU, and Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry since the beginning of 2025. His research interests are mainly focused on the understanding of different (photo)catalytic processes, and the understanding of reactivity and properties of polymeric materials. Regarding the research activity, since 1999 Jon M. Matxain has been author of 115 publications (research articles, books and book chapters), with an h-index of 34 according to Web of Science (35 in Scopus). He has participated in around 70 conferences, 30 of them as invited speaker. In addition to this, he has participated in 25 funded research projects, 7 of them as Principal Investigator. Due to all this research activity, he has been recognized with 4 research periods (1 period = 6 years). In addition to the research activity, Jon M. Matxain have a teaching experience of 15 years, and have participated along this period in different subjects of the area of Physical Chemistry, both in Bachellor and Master degree. During all this period he has supervised 22 Final-Year-Works, 9 Master Thesis and 7 Ph.D Thesis. In addition to teaching and research activities, he is also involved in University Management, where he was the Academic Secretary of the Department of Polymer Science and Technology, and nowadays he belongs to the Faculty Board, being the Dean of the Faculty He participates, since 2013, in the Social Dissemination of Science, with periodic collaborations in radio programs, and in events organized by the UPV/EHU, and other institutions such as DIPC, CFM etc, like Pint of Science, Science Week, and others.
