Doctor by the Universidad del País Vasco - Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea with the thesis Derivados beta-imino y beta-hidrazono fosforados como intermedios en síntesis orgánica 2002. Supervised by Dr. Francisco Javier Palacios Gambra, Dr. Domitila Aparicio Gutiérrez.
Javier Vicario (October 8th, 1975) grew up in Imíruri, a small village next to Vitoria-Gasteiz. He graduated in Chemistry in 1998 for the University of the Basque Country and then completed his PhD in 2003 under the guidance of Prof. Francisco Palacios, in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, struggling with the chemistry of phosphorated enamines and hydrazones. Then he joined Ben Feringa’s research group at the University of Groningen, where he completed a two-year postdoc period, working mainly in the design of catalytic and light driven molecular motors, their attachment to surfaces, their applications as chiral dopants in liquid crystals and supramolecular chemistry. In 2006, he moved back to the Faculty of Pharmacy in Vitoria-Gasteiz as a postdoctoral researcher and extended his previous work in the chemistry of phosphorated enamines and azadienes. In 2007 he was awarded with a Ramón y Cajal Grant and started a new research line, focused in organocatalytic processes for the synthesis of aminophosphorus compounds . In 2012 he obtained the I3 certificate from the Programme of Incentives for the incorporation and strengthening of research activity from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and in 2013, he was hired as an Associate Researcher and then as Associate Professor in 2021 at the Department of Organic Chemistry of the University of the Basque Country. There, as a member of the research group Organic Synthesis in Medicinal Chemistry (OSMC), he continues working in the field of organocatalysis, especially in multicomponent processes and has open a new research line regarding the evaluation of the anticancer activity of aminophosphorus and lactam derivatives. His actual main research interests include the preparation of new enantiopure aminoacid and aminophosphonic acid derivatives, using organocatalytic multicomponent processes and the evaluation of their cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines. Besides chemistry, outside the lab, Javi is the proud father of three children and enjoys hanging out with friends, hiking or running marathons and, especially, cooking for his family and friends.
