Doctor by the Universidad del País Vasco - Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea with the thesis Generalized hold devices for digital-to-analog conversion in electronically controlled systems 2014. Supervised by Dr. Koldobika Basterrechea Oyarzabal, Dr. Rafael Bárcena Ruiz.

Unai Ugalde Olea (BSc in Physics; MEng in Electronics) holds a PhD from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He initially worked in the telecommunications sector as a Systems and Networks Technician (1992-1993), but soon obtained a Predoctoral fellowship at the Instituto de Energía Solar of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (1994). Here, Unai participated in European projects in the field of photovoltaic cell and panel manufacturing technologies (1994-1997), obtaining the so-called Research Proficiency ("Suficiencia Investigadora"). Back in the private sector (1998), in R+D+i tasks, he also worked as a part-time teacher at the Faculty of Sciences, UPV/EHU (2001-2002). He then joined the Faculty of Engineering (2003), where he currently teaches full-time a range of subjects in different languages, including in English. Today Unai is a member of the Apert research group. He conducts research into Power Electronics. Unai has two "sexenios" (Spanish award for research performance), and currently co-directs two doctoral theses: as a result of the first, as of January 2024 two articles in Q1 journals and one in a Q2 journal have been achieved; in the second, the doctoral student has obtained a predoctoral IP contract in a competitive call, and has achieved a Q2 publication.
