Efectos de la victimización y el miedo al delito en el bienestar de habitantes de Ocotlán, Jalisco

Abstract

The study of the relationship between problems related to insecurity on personal well-being has increased in the last decade. However, research has focused primarily on highly developed countries and the results are not conclusive. This study aims to analyze the relationship between direct, indirect, and vicarious victimization and fear of crime on subjective well-being, emotional climate, and social well-being, in inhabitants of Ocotlán, Jalisco, Mexico. We carried out a quantitative, cross-sectional study with 315 adults aged 18 to 85 years (59.9% women). We applied scales of life satisfaction, social well-being, and emotional climate, as well as questionnaires on fear of crime, victimization, and sociodemographic data. The results revealed that women and people who have been victims are more afraid of crime; that victimization and fear of crime are negatively related to subjective well-being through negative emotional climate and that there are differences by sex in the effects of victimization and fear on well-being. We discuss the implications of the results in the development of social programs with distinctions by sex and aimed at improving the emotional climate of the inhabitants.
