Resumen

The study and intervention in historical buildings is a significant challenge in the field of architecture due to the construction complexity and intrinsic historical-artistic values of this building typology. While protecting these buildings is crucial for their safeguarding and preserving their cultural value, sometimes implemented restrictions can limit the transmission of their contents to society. In this context, virtual reconstruction is becoming an increasingly important technique for the museumization of historical buildings. However, these techniques require a high-precision geometric characterization that cannot always be achieved with conventional methods. This chapter aims to analyze photogrammetry as a non-destructive and cost-effective indirect measurement technique for the massive capture of high-precision geometric data. The case study of the late Gothic church of Donostia-San Sebastián, one of the oldest preserved monuments in the city, is presented. One of the central nave vaults is thoroughly analyzed, and the precision and reliability of the results obtained through photogrammetry are compared with those obtained through terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) as a direct measurement technology. The research results demonstrate that photogrammetry is a precise alternative for the massive capture of geometric data. However, the importance of complementing the measurements made with alternative high-precision systems to obtain references that allow scaling of the developed models is emphasized. This approach can be very useful for improving the productivity of the construction industry and preserving cultural heritage more effectively.
