Abstract
This paper aims to examine the far-reaching significance of wallpaper imports to Spain during the 18th and 19th centuries. Foreign dependence, in terms ofspecialised labour, raw materials and certain ready-made products significantly weakened the country’s productive fabric in this sector. Neither the government’s protectionist policies nor the large investments made by determined entrepreneurs managed to break entirely free from this foreign subordination. There was nonetheless a positive aspect to this internationalisation, as it imposed prevailing tastes and styles in interior decoration in Europe during these centuries.
