Studies on poverty and hospices or houses of mercy have a long history in Spanish historiography, but the focus has not always been on the identification of those assisted, largely due to the limitations imposed by the documentary sources themselves. Consequently, hospices have always been shown as spaces that oscillate between assistance and repression. In this paper we propose to study those assisted by the Casa de Misericordia of Tolosa, taking as a starting point the memorandums of admission presented to it between 1797 and 1802. The data collected there have been complemented with parish archives, notarial and judicial sources, which together allow us to broaden the picture of the family, social and economic structures of those attended. The aim is to better understand what was the predominant profile of those assisted by the hospices.
