Abstract

Juan de Borja refers twice to Horace’s Odes in the Empresas morales. Both quotations, devices 94 and 95, are intrinsically intertwined with both the strategy of dissimulation, born in the period to enable the combination of political play with the fulfilment of religious dogmas, and with themselves. The fact that Borja arranges both devices consecutively seems to bring a special significance to the pair: the necessity of prudence both in war and peace.
