Abstract

Language is a social phenomenon, similar to any other social phenomenon, which creates and suffers the contradictions of the society it belongs to. So, language reflects the conflicts of society. All languages, per se, have the same value and the same rigths. But in a country, like ours where there is a great deal of conflict and where collective and individual rigths are at cross purposes, the collective rigths that correspond to a linguistic community have the priority. Due to the fact that language reflects the power relations, the normalisation process of a language in a dominated country will eventually face the State. The power generally decides the lifespan of a language. And this is the case of the Basque language.
