Abstract
The aim of the present study was to carry out a preliminary evaluation of an immunoturbidimetric method for measurement of apolipoproteins (apo) A-I and B in dried blood spots. The method used was based on the technique developed by Bangert et al, adapted to a Hitachi 911 autoanalyzer. The coefficient of determination between concentrations of apo B in dried blood spots and serum was 0.929. The inter-assay coefficient of variation (CV) was 7.4% at 0.63 g/l and was 2.97% at 1.64 g/l (n = 9). The intra-assay CV was 6.7% at 0.58 g/l (n = 13). The coefficient of determination between concentrations of apo A-I in dried blood spots and serum was 0.892. The intra-assay CV was 5.8% at 0.86 g/l (n = 13) and was 3.9% at 97.4 mg/dL (n = 10). These results indicate that measurement of apo B and apo A-I in dried blood spots is a reliable method, which could probably be used to screen for familial hypercholesterolemia in childhood.
