Estado y necesidades de tratamiento periodontal en los ancianos institucionalizados españoles

Abstract

An epidemiological survey of periodontal status and treatment needs of the institutionalized Spanish elderly was performed. Method and patients: A random sample of Spanish elderly according to representativity and proportionality between age groups and Autonomic Communities was made.The total number of the sample was 3282. CPITN index was used and the prevalence of each CPITN category, the intraoral distribution of signs, severity and periodontal treatment needs were specifically studied. Results: 52.8% of institutionalized Spanish elderly are edentulous. We did not found any case of periodontal health. Gingival bleeding as the maximun score was detected in 1.3% of the sample, calculus without periodontal pockets in 8.9, moderate pockets in 35.9 and deep pockets (6 mm or more) we detected only in 1. 2% of the patients. Greatest severity corresponded to excluded sextants (4.75), followed by mode rate pockets (0.75). 94.7% of Spanish elderl y with teeth showed perioclontal treatment needs TN2 type. Complex periodontal treatment needs prevalence was low (1 .2%).
