An epidemiological transversal survey of the caries status in the spanish institutionalized elderly was performed. Patients and method: A random representative sample of 3282 persons was chosen. Recommendations for epidemiological surveys of the FDl/WHO were strictly followed. Results and conclu- sions: 52,8% of the spanish elderly were edentulous. The mean number of teeth was 6,24 per person. Caries prevalence was 92,3% in the elderly with teeth. DMFT index figure was 29,37, of which 88,4% corresponded to the component of missing teeth, 11,3% to the caries component and 0,3% corresponded to fillings. Exodontic treatment was estimated to be required in 84,4% of the spanish dentated elderly.
