Abstract
Infection in the apical periodontium or in the radicular canals could interfere with periodontal healing. To test this hypothesis, literatura was reviewed in order to investiga te if the bacteria! species involved are the same in both cases; and which are the data available regarding the influence of endodontal pathology and therapy on periodontal pathology and healing. Answering the first question, the microflora involved in endodontic infections (in apical periodontium and in the radicular canals) in simple, with few different species, and high prevalencee of indigenous periodontal pathogens (F. nucleatum, P. intermedia, P. micros). The literature pointed out a clear relation between infections in the apical periodontium and greater severity of periodontal destruction, and also worse outcome of periodontal treatment. It seems to exist an important relation among endodontic infection and periodontitis, based on the fact that they share a similar bacteria! etiology.
