Abstract

Increasingly, the economic crisis of the Spanish state is being transformed into a crisis of citizens’ rights, marked by ever-greater inequality and discrimination. This, together with the trend towards differential management of the population, means that the recession is having a proportionally greater impact on the migrant population. In the city of Madrid, identity checks on the basis of phenotype ethnic profile, carried out in the urban public space, are increasingly conditioning the access to rights in the city. In response to this, the Brigadas Vecinales de Observación de Derechos Humanos or community human rights watchdog movement has organized to take collective action in socially denouncing these identity checks.
