Resumen

This thesis proposes the design and development of novel mixed metal oxides as thermochemical material for application in thermal energy storage and especially as active thermal barrier coating. The development of this type of tailor-made materials could help on the one hand the penetration of renewable energy sources in the society and on the other hand, the protection of a wide variety of materials used in high temperature industrial processes. Starting from pure metal oxide (Co3O4), the research work has focused on different aspects such as i) the modification of the material through the synthesis of different mixed oxides in order to tune the working temperature; ii) the improvement of the cyclability by using different types of additives and the kinetic study of these doped materials; and iii) the novel application as an active thermal barrier coating. This application is a new concept in which the coating formed by the thermochemical material dampens through redox reactions (endothermic and exothermic) the temperature variations suffered by a metallic component exposed to high and fluctuating temperatures.
