Abstract
The uniform model of state in France as we know it today is the outcome of a long process leading to the country's centralization and acculturation, which was accelerated by the overhaul of the educational system promoted by Jules Ferry (1882) and completed only after the two World Wars. Within that span of time there arose some dissenting voices, among which the Bretons (the Emsav) were particularly noteworthy. The politic wing of this movement gave rise to a mosaic of factions in the twentieth century, encompassing catholic regionalists as well as profascist separatists and federalists and even attracting some leftist groups. Their reactions during the nazi occupation in France were therefore dissimilar (ranging from collaborationism to neutrality, opportunism and opposition) although the Emsav is best known today for its collaborationism with the nazis
