Abstract

This is an exploratory research article, which seeks to carry out an approach to the analysis of the contribution and impact of the implementation of an Education and Menstrual Hygiene program on the enrolment of girls in rural schools in Uganda. This program is developed within the framework of the work carried out by the Saluganda Association in vulnerable low-income rural communities in the districts of Mukono and Buikwe. Data collected in November 2021 is analysed; where 94 surveys were conducted on girls aged 9-13 years, from 8 rural schools in Uganda. The aim is to be able to obtain some initial data that will guide subsequent research as well as implement programs that are effective in preventing school absenteeism due to menstruation and what this entails. The main results show us the high percentage of girls who do not go to school during their menstrual period, and show the interest in making their own pads. Likewise, other deficiencies are manifested related to the knowledge of the biological and psychological process that menstruation implies, and in some cases the implicit taboo regarding the situation of the menstrual period. Interventions in education and menstrual hygiene should address the sociocultural aspects of menstruation. The need to continue working on the education and menstrual hygiene program is concluded. The problem must be approached in a holistic way, integrating aspects of health, education and gender equality, to promote the management of health and menstrual hygiene with dignity among girls and women.
