Abstract
The aim of the research summarized by this contribution is to reconstruct the word order of the ancestor common to all Germanic languages. With this aim in mind the author undertakes an approach that is related to previous attempts and which at the same time is innovative: this investigation is based on the Branching Direction Theory (Dryer, 1992). Said theory is the result of research on typological universals of word order. Moreover, most of the data are drawn from Old Saxon, a severely underinvestigated Germanic language. The results improve findings made by research so far.
