At the end of 2002, a new research group was formed in the Graphic Expression area in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of the Basque country. This group started an investigation about Reverse Engineering and its applications in the small and medium enterprises of the Basque Autonomous Community. As a result of this groupwork we have analyzed the surface Construction Approaches in the styling design as they are used nowadays. Thus, we have considered data interpolation (points, tangents, curvatures) and the use of poles or control vertices. Besides, we have considered surface construction approaching with mesh of curves, sweeping or direct construction of the surface with the interactive edition of its poles. In this study, we present a comparison of these approaches and we also compare the most extended programs in the market, such as: Alias, ICEM, UGS NX2 and, Catia V4 and V5.
