Resumen

Pese a su incuestionable presencia en el desarrollo vital de una gran parte de los seres humanos, la menopausia es un fenómeno raro en el contexto de los mamíferos. En la mayor parte de este grupo el envejecimiento fisiológico y el reproductivo se dan a la par y, habitualmente, se asocian a una muerte cercana. La menopausia, sin embargo, se refiere a una senescencia principalmente reproductiva que, en los humanos, se produce antes que su senescencia general y que no supone el fin de su trayectoria de vida. La senescencia biológica ocurre de forma paralela a otros procesos que configuran el proceso de envejecimiento humano.
