Abstract

This paper arose from a project commissioned by the Diputación Foral (Provincial Council) of Bizkaia's Historie Heritage Directorate, which was designed to evaluate the anthopological interest of church cemeteries, as an aid in planning future interventions affecting such areas. Seven representative churches in Bizkaia were chosen, with two soundings being performed in each. Archaeological evidence and documentary data were used to establish the size and structure of the cemeteries, time-scale of use, burial practices and other related features of burials such as funeral rites. Anthropological information supplied by the bones recovered was also evaluated with a view to further studies of inchurch necropolis.
