Abstract

Conventional indicators for economic development, such as GDP per capita, are suffering from severe obsolescence and being replaced by other measures of well-being. This paper proposes a composite index that measures social well-being in the municipalities of the Basque Country. The methods used for scale transformation and normalization allows both cross-sectional (between municipalities) and longitudinal comparisons (between different moments of time). With the results obtained, Basque population has been classified according to the level of well-being in their municipality of residence. The research also provides evidence that well-being has increased in the Basque Country between 2001 and 2020, and tends to converge in the same period.
