Abstract

The investigations about the exploitation of the abiotic resources during the Gravettian in the Cantabrian Coast are still poorly developed, in general, they are lacking in methods that concentrate on the characteristics of their origin. Previous studies have focused on the supply of the lithic resources in a general way, establishing a model where a clear difference between the eastern and western territories of the Cantabrian Coast was appreciated: the area «with flint» and the area «without flint». This model needs qualifying because, in recent investigations of the archaeological sites, important movements of lithic materials have been noticed, as well as new flint outcrops in areas of the Western Cantabrian (Asturias). With this information, in the Western Pyrenees and Basque-Cantabrian Basin, we have obtained lithic resources exploitation patterns; and we think that they could be transferred to the whole Cantabrian Gravettian. This pattern can be summed up in two points: firstly, the utilization of the lithic raw material which is found close to the sites, and secondly, the inclusion of lithic artifacts from distant sources, always manufactured in good quality materials.
