Abstract
Cultural heritage building preserved in a city is intimately linked to the nature of the materials used for its construction. Rock as a material of use has been of great value since prehistoric times. In more recent times, the type of lithology used in construction defines the character of different cities, providing colours and textures that are directly associated with that city. Donosti has an international tourist interest, and it preserves numerous samples of its built heritage. In this work, four buildings of great architectural interest have been selected, which provide the city with its luxurious character and splendour that envelops the landscape. These buildings are analysed from a geological and architectural point of view, characterising both their historical construction and the different rocks used. In this way, disciplines such as geology, architecture or his- tory intertwine their research in a transdisciplinary way (Damas-Mollá et al., 2019). Donosti paints yellow of its Eocene sandstones combined with greys, pinks and reds of different Cretaceous limestones, although some buildings are painted with brightly coloured brushstrokes of other exotic ornamental rocks. Results may serve for elaborating informative content in geomonumental routes (Aranburu et al., 2010), workshops for students, practices or specific guided tours.
