Cambios oceanográficos en el Cuaternario final detectados por medio de microfauna frente al Geoparque de la Costa Vasca (sur del Golfo de Vizcaya)

The paleoceanographic changes with the greatest impact that occurred at the end of the Holocene in the eastern area of the Basque Platform were studied by means of the micropaleontological analysis of 9 surface samples (BE03), 8 of the sediment core KS04-4 and 15 of KS04-8. The trends of the relative abundances of benthic foraminifera, planktonic foraminifera and ostriches, as well as the oceanic index were analyzed. The main species (> 10% of the total) were considered as benthic indicators: Hyalinea balthica, Melonis barleeanus, Uvigerina peregrina (foraminifera) and Krithe sp. (ostracoda). Secondary species (5-10%) were also taken into account, such as Cassidulina laevigata, Bulimina gibba and Valvulineria bradyana. The results show a periodic cooling of the more superficial waters that could be conditioned by the presence of continuous upwelling phenomena from the deep ocean through the San Sebastian Canyon, which would explain the presence of benthic species characteristic of water cold and deep.
