Muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) provides information on muscle metabolism at rest and during exercise. The aim of the doctoral thesis is to use SmO2 for the study of fatigue performance and health. It was hypothesized that SmO2 is related to neuromuscular, biochemical, physiological, metabolic parameters and training load. Female (n= 25) and male (n= 16) footballers and overweight/obese and normal-weight people (n= 17) participated in the study. The portable non-invasive near infrared (NIRS) portable technology was used, placed in the gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis muscle. Resting SmO2 was measured using the arterial occlusion method (AOM) to study fatigue before and after an official match and PRE-POST during a preseason for the study of performance and adaptation to training in soccer players. Also, a high intensity test (repeated sprints) with measurements of muscle oxygen extraction and incremental maximal test was performed to identify metabolic zones (fatmax, VT1, VT2 and maximum aerobic power) through the SmO2. The variables that were measured in connection with SmO2 were: Body composition, jumping power, Borg scale, speed, heart rate, oxygen consumption, energy expenditure and biochemicals: LDH, BUN, CPK and GOT. Measurement of SmO2 at rest and movement can be implemented by exercise science professionals because it was linked to fatigue and performance variables such as LDH, jumping power, body composition and speed. The use of SmO2 is also proposed in the exercise prescription for health.
