Abstract

The mentoring process facilitates the personal, academic and mental development of the students. Such a peer-process gives to the students the opportunity to learn from each other. That process is familiar and adapted to the needs of the students. This way, the objective of the peer-mentoring program of the University of The Basque Country is twofold: first, academic, social and personal integration of new students when they arrive into the university, and, second, improvement of transversal competences of mentor students regarding personal, social and professional skills. The program is flexible, and, therefore, each University School can adapt it to its reality in an active way. The program is implemented by means of different phases: Information and dissemination; Recruitment, Selection and Training of the mentor students; Intervention and Evaluation. The evolution of the BAT program along the years has been very positive, from the academic course 2012-2013 until now. At that time only 20 mentors took part in the program, but during the current academic year 128 students have such a role. In addition, more than 3000 firstyear students get benefit from this program at the present and they show a high degree of satisfaction, as they consider the help received by older students who have gone through the same experience is very useful. Moreover, the tutors stress its improvement in transversal competences.
