Abstract

This article reconstructs the context of the tributes made to Antonio Machado in 1959 and Gabriel Celaya’s participation in them, especially the acts of Segovia and Madrid, which the poet from San Sebastian writes about in several articles. It studies the relevance of Antonio Machado’s work and ideas to Celaya’s critical and essayistic work, and its echos in postwar Spanish social poetry, in order to place in context a “forgotten” article by Celaya about Antonio Machado, titled “La pervivencia Antonio Machado.” The article is signed under the pseudonym “Juan de Juanes,” which the poet had already used on previous occasions, allowing us to date the work to 1959. It is not indexed or included in Celaya’s critical books or in his Ensayos literarios (2009), and is offered here with various notes on its sources and content.
