Abstract

Since the last quarter of the 20th century, the ninth art is fully in its sails and never ceases to reinvent itself in the literary adaptation of classical literary works such as La Princesse de Clèves published by Dargaud in 2019. An ambitious step for Madame de La Fayette’s lovers. Indeed, the challenge resides in transferring into images a text belonging to a psychological literary work where the main character’s mood is reproduced by long interior monologues. Considering the iconic and verbal dimension of comics, the adaptation of this novel into comics might be compromised. This article aims to examine the reasons for this challenge as well as the targeted audience. We will also consider if this version could be used as an educational tool.
