Abstract
The aim of this paper is to show that Begoña´s Sanctuary is an emotional place closely linked to the religiosity of Bilbao. Indeed Begoña is the place where religious identity was expressed in Bilbao beginning the twentieth century. In this paper we understand that religious identity is one of the battle fields in the experience of the modernity. In order to understand this fight we will analyze the so called “La Begoñada” of 1903, when, as a consequence of the massive pilgrimages to the sanctuary, a great fight was triggered between clericalism and anticlericalism (republicans and socialists).
