Resumen

This paper focuses on the geometry of the Utrillas (Albian) basal unconformity in the south of Cantabria. It is a sharp angular unconformity, accounting for up to 1300 m of eroded sediments. In map view the unconformity erodes older sedimentary rocks westwards, however, its structural features show a prominent NE-SW to N-S trend, where the substrate of the surface is older northwards. Such a structural configuration is striking considering that an Early Cretaceous extensional depocenter is located northwards and consequently it might be uplifted during the Aptian-Albian times. Among the considered hypothesis, the best fitted is the occurrence of a transpressive inversion event during the Aptian-Albian. Aside of the implications regarding the model of basin evolution, the importance of such an inversion event for shale gas exploration in the Basque-Cantabrian basin is highlighted.
