Abstract

The El Polvorín Cave (within the karstic complex of Ranero) is located in the embedded Karrantza Valley (Bizkaia), about 170 meters above the sea level, which is the unique point of drainage of a radial fluvial network. Intense fluvial erosion, along with the action of other gravitational and dissolution processes, is responsible for the current geomorphology of the valley, emphasizing the Karst of Ranero massif and a canyon of NW-SE direction. Application of classical geomorphological and stratigraphical methodologies have allowed identified 3 sequences aloestratigráficas, both in edokárstic sediments of the cave El Polvorín and in the river terraces of the Karrantza River. Correlation of both sedimentary records provides new insights into the geological history of the valley over the last 50-40 ka.
