Abstract

The Basque territory was affected during the Modern Age by several outbreaks of witchcraft. This work aims to analyze what was the concept of witch elaborated mainly by the witchcraft treatises. What judicial instances intervened and how did these judges act? What was witchcraft like in the collective imagination and what factors contributed to popular beliefs? Especially interesting is the confrontation between two different views: those who considered the events attributed to witches to be real and the moderate group of skeptics. During the witch hunt, those women lived through dramatic situations. But what were they really: criminals or victims?
