Abstract

Numerous investigations have highlighted the importance of motivation in second language acquisition. So much so that it is suggested that motivation, understood as a dynamic and variable component determined by internal, social, and contextual factors, can contribute to the success or failure of the language learning process. Within this framework, this study seeks to identify the attitudes of bilingual students (Basque and Spanish language speakers) pursuing the Degrees of Primary Education and Early Childhood Education towards English. 229 students have answered a questionnaire about the different motivational aspects strongly linked to foreign language learning. The results attest that it is the external and professional factors that most determine positive attitudes toward English. Additionally, it is observed that students highly value the work of the teaching staff, their ability to manage the classroom and the methodology used. The relevance of this study lies in the increasing importance of English for future teachers of these educational stages in a trilingual model that is progressively gaining ground to the detriment of bilingual mode
