Abstract
HVDC systems are developing into HVDC grids, with additional requirements to point-to-point systems. Among those requirements, the protection of the grids against faults in the direct current (DC) transmission lines is remarkably demanding, basically because of the lack of current zero and of the available short time, which must be in the order of few milliseconds. In consequence, traditionally, HVDC systems have been protected from the alternating current (AC) side, with conventional AC circuit breakers. Thus, the absence of circuit breakers in the DC side, requires a long time for clearing DC faults, and results in the complete de-energization of the system, which is not appropriate for the reliable operation of a grid. This paper deals with the circuit breakers that are feasible for HVDC grids. This way, the topologies are presented and their application in actual systems under operation is reviewed.
