Abstract

Objective: the genetic basis of epileptic diseases are shown as models of central nervous system disorders with multigenic hereditary factors. Material and methods: review of the current knowledge on the genetic factors of epileptic disorders. Results: the general concepts of the genetic factors in central nervous system disorders are shown. Generalized epilepsy, partial epilepsy, epileptic syndromes and mitochondrial epilepsies are reviewed. Conclusions: the current knowledge of epilepsy has modified the classification of these disorders and is helping to a better pathophysiological interpretation of seizures.
