Although the testimonies to which we have access are of a very fragmentary nature, it is possible to recognize in them the deep interest that the first philosophers express for sleep as a state opposite to vigil, for the physiology of the dream and for the dream phenomena that accompany the sleep. Although theories about sleep and dreams are especially developed in Heraclitus and Democritus, numerous authors also perceive an interest in the description and rational explanation of these phenomena.
