Abstract

Begoña del Teso, in an interview with Mikel Echegaray in 2011 for the Diario Vasco newspaper, de-scribed him as "The quiet boy who reaches 133 km / h". This descrip-tion, which captures brilliantly the sensation experimented when you listen to Mikel talking about his sport, contains a rich story about a way of life around a particular sport. But what is the Street Luge and why a young guy from Donostia-San Se-bastián decides to practice it and be-comes the World Champion? In this communication we make a small sketch of the sport in the eyes of Mikel Echegaray, Champion of the two modes of Luge, Classic Lugeand Street Luge. Through the case study we explore a sporting practice on the margins of the more classic sports, therefore enabling us to get to know it in depth, but also to acquire a very particular and suggestive per-spective for the study of the dynam-ics of re-institutionalization of con-temporary sports.
