Abstract

In this article I analyze the categorization, normalization and recognition processes of three crop varieties: the Jack tomato, the Purple Tomato of Aretxabaleta, and the no-name tomato or home-tomato. Understanding seeds as naturecultures, I aim to better understand how these varieties are produced and act as such, to then further study the processes that create them and what they do. Quality, origin, and locality, as political identity and type of autochthony and as added value to the product of proximity, will appear as fundamental values in the production of these tomatoes and for the people who consume them.
